Cemetery a Day in May: Fernandez Cemetery Reserve (Nassau)

The Fernandez Cemetery Reserve is a burial ground for the Fernandez family located in the middle of a plaza downtown Fernandina Beach.  Located on the the corner of 4th Street and Broom.  Given its proximity to St. Michael's church, I was originally confused into thinking this was a churchyard, but is in fact the remnants of a small family cemetery.

Who:  Managed by Catholic Diocese

What: 365 headstones and markers, noted for its white sand
Where:  One acre park on Leo Maguire Road, off Rt. 210 Google Map

When:  In public view, for more information contact the Bishop of St. Augustine

 Why:

• Listed on the National Register in 1973
• Family burials dating to 1833through 1892
• Burial of Domingo Fernandez, controversial figure in Fernandina history
