Cemetery A Day In May: Fellsmere Brookside Cemetery
Cemetery Log Date: May 15, 2014
A slice of life before the area became the "Treasure Coast."
Brookside Cemetery in Fellsmere in Indian River County is an example of an old Florida cemetery that has resisted too many changes over the years. Serving the small community of Fellsmere since the late 19th century, Brookside contains an interesting array of markers depicting changes times and economic periods; professionally made markers rest aside homemade cement markers that speak to the history of this small historically agriculture-centered community. As are many historic cemeteries, Brookside is partitioned between the African-American and White sections and contains many of the founding families for the area.
Who: Could not determine, but The Sebastian Historical Society is listed as a contact on state files.
What: Still in use, 19th century to present. Many folk art markers.
Where: East of I-95 and just north of the intersection of County Roads 512 and 510.
When: Could not find operating hours.
